Cosmetic Dentist Advice: Is Cosmetic Bonding Right For You?

November 17, 2014

157247370Let’s face it. We put our teeth through a lot of wear and tear. If you’re like most people, you have more than one concern about your smile. You may not only want a whiter smile, but a straighter, better aligned or more consistently shaped and spaced smile. Fortunately all of these concerns can be addressed by one simple procedure, cosmetic bonding. To see if cosmetic bonding is right for you, just make an appointment with the experienced and attentive dentists of Elmbrook Family Dental today. The cosmetic dentistry experts at Elmbrook Family Dental proudly serve patients throughout Brookfield, WI, Elm Grove, Milwaukee, Pewaukee, Waukesha, New Berlin and nearby areas.

The Cosmetic Bonding Procedure

Cosmetic bonding procedures are surprisingly simple. The dentist starts by finding a composite resin shade that matches your teeth. Then the surface of your tooth is roughened and a conditioning liquid is applied. This helps the bonding material adhere to the tooth. The tooth-colored resin is then applied, molded, and smoothed to the desired tooth shape. An ultraviolet light or laser is then used to harden the putty- like resin. After the material is hardened, the dentist will trim, shape and polish it to match the sheen of the tooth surface.

What Problems Can Cosmetic Bonding Fix?

  • Dental bonding is an incredibly versatile cosmetic procedure. Dental bonding can help to correct:
  • Decayed teeth (except cavities)
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Discoloration
  • Gaps and spaces
  • Elongate shortened teeth
  • Irregular shaping
  • An alternative to amalgam fillings
  • Protect tooth roots exposed by receding gums

Are Partial Dentures Right for You?

October 21, 2014

497239825A “partial” is a term most people use to refer to a partial denture. Dentures are custom-made prosthetic teeth, usually attached to a gum colored plastic plate. If you are missing more than one tooth but you have mostly healthy teeth, getting a custom-fitted partial to replace your missing teeth is a good solution. Partial dentures can be set up in multiple ways. It’s important to replace any missing teeth to prevent the shifting and misalignment of your other teeth and to maintain normal oral functions like eating and speaking clearly. If you need to replace your missing teeth, make an appointment with the experienced and attentive dentists of Elmbrook Family Dental today. The dentists at Elmbrook Family Dental proudly serve patients throughout Brookfield, WI, Elm Grove, Milwaukee, Pewaukee, Waukesha, New Berlin and nearby areas.

Types of Partial Dentures

Partial dentures can be either fixed or removable. Removable partial dentures fit in the mouth with metal clasps that hook onto surrounding teeth and require daily maintenance. Fixed partials, also known as bridges, are partials that are anchored to surrounding healthy teeth by a dental bridge. Dental bridges require the surrounding teeth to be shaped and fitted with dental crowns (caps) to allow more room for the bridge and partial denture to fit comfortably in the mouth. Partial dentures can also be attached to a dental implant. Dental implants are tiny titanium rods that replace missing tooth roots and maintain the integrity of the jawbone. Partial dentures attached to dental implants are securely snapped onto the implant but can be easily removed.

Quality Partial Dentures in Brookfield, WI

Although dental implants offer the most benefits, individual medical factors may affect your eligibility to get dental implants. In some cases, removable partial dentures may be the best option. The choice should be made in a consultation with your dentist. Make an appointment with the gentle dentists of Elmbrook Family Dental today. Elmbrook Family Dental currently serves patients throughout Brookfield, WI, Elm Grove, Milwaukee, Pewaukee, Waukesha, New Berlin and surrounding communities.

Quick tips to keeping a healthy smile!

September 15, 2014

On a daily basis, we put our teeth through a lot of work! While those pearly whites are helping you to smile, bite into those yummy sandwiches and chew up that fantastic food, we need to remember to keep them safe from gum disease, breaking and decay. Follow these simply steps to lower your risks:

Use your teeth for biting and chewing food. Contrary to what a lot of us do, teeth are not made for removing tags from that adorable new shirt you just bought. Or as a bottle opener! Yup, we’ve seen it all. Using your teeth for things like this can cause to chips, cracks or breaks. Don’t worry, if you didn’t read this blog in time, we are only a phone call away and can get you fixed!

Avoid sipping on juice, sports drinks, coffee, soda and diet soda all day. These liquid sugars and acids pose a much lower risk when they are consumed with a meal. Just remember the catchy phrase: “Sip all day, get decay.”

Brush twice daily and floss daily! Rinse with water between meals or chew sugar free gum. Having these simple things in your routine greatly reduce your chances of getting gum disease, cavities and build up.

See your favorite Elmbrook Family Dental team members twice yearly for routine cleanings, exams and x-rays. Early detection and prevention lead to lower cost dental visits in the future!

What is Xylitol?

August 28, 2014

Many of you have consumed xylitol and didn’t even know it. So let us tell you a little bit about what it is, and how it can help improve your dental health.

Xylitol is a product often used as a sugar alternative. It is the main ingredient in a few common sugar free chewing gums than many of us chew. It is what makes your piece of gum sweet and tasty! So, how is it so good for your teeth? Use of xylitol through chewing gum, xylitol mints, toothpaste or other products may lower your risk of getting tooth decay by a third. It helps to stimulate a healthy salivary flow and can promote remineralization of enamel. Less cavities? Sounds good to us!

Next time you’re in the check out lane at the grocery store, stop and check out labels on the sugar free gum. Consider chewing a piece after meals, or when your mouth is feeling a little dry. Xylitol products and a good water intake can play a key role in pushing off your next trip to the dentist.
